The Rhode Island Senate adopted a resolution on March 14 designating March 14 as a day to commemorate the history of the mathematical constant pi.
After the clerk read the resolution, a senator delivered floor remarks celebrating Pi Day and related mathematical history. During those remarks the senator acknowledged that “the reader read was initially generated by ChatGPT,” adding that they had verified the references before submitting the text. The senator said they would not recommend using ChatGPT to draft laws, but noted the resolution had been checked for accuracy before filing. The chamber voted to adopt the resolution by voice vote.
What’s next: The secretary of state will be directed to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the Rhode Island Mathematics Teachers Association as provided in the resolution text.
