During the committee’s review of the Nuclear Decommissioning Citizens Advisory Panel report, Representative Kathleen James asked for an update on per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the Vermont Yankee site.
Tony Lushinski, the state nuclear engineer, said PFAS were expected at the site because of a transformer fire in the early 1990s and the historical use of firefighting foams. He told the committee that "there was some discovered, in, we received notification on this, in September 2025" and that NorthStar engaged a hazardous‑materials contractor (identified in the transcript as Haley and Aldridge / Aldridge spelled variably). Lushinski said DEC is reviewing a report from that contractor and has returned comments; he estimated the turnaround on DEC’s determination could be "1 to 3 months."
Commissioner Carrick Johnson confirmed the PFAS matter was the subject of an extensive panel presentation and robust questioning from panel members. Jim Pinkerton said NorthStar and its hazardous‑materials contractor had been collaborative and that the municipality has been involved with investigations and follow‑up.
The committee did not receive a final remediation plan during the hearing; DEC’s review remains in process and the panel advised the committee it will continue to track DEC findings and next steps.
