Panel advances bill to allow human-trafficking expert testimony and expand AG victim services

Senator Weaver explained SB 1810, saying it was requested by the Attorney General’s office and would allow human-trafficking expert testimony in prosecutions. Weaver described operational difficulties in trafficking cases and said law enforcement often must partner with nongovernmental agencies because criminal investigators cannot provide the specialized expert testimony needed in court.

Weaver said the bill also adds victims of human trafficking to the list of people eligible for services from the Attorney General’s victim-service unit, allowing the AG’s office to provide additional help to trafficking victims.

Chair moved and Senator Wingard seconded a do-pass motion. With no recorded debate and a unanimous roll call of 7–0, the committee advanced SB 1810. Chairman Weaver then presided, thanked members for the quick meeting and adjourned the committee.
