Council members used the March 25 meeting to share community announcements affecting Memorial Field, residents and small businesses.
Vice Mayor Linda Childs Jeter told council that Lincoln Heights Jubilee Day is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. She said the village and Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church plan to use Memorial Field for a large tent, music and kid-friendly activities. Interim Manager Mr. Lehi said the village will order parkour equipment (expected delivery in about eight to nine weeks) and is exploring installation of security cameras and grant-funded repairs to field lights and the scoreboard so the field will be ready for spring baseball and fall football.
Clerk Miss Randolph announced a Lincoln Heights seniors scholarship application packet is available in the lobby and online; the deadline to apply is Friday, April 19, 2024. She also reported that a minority-owned, Black-owned pharmacy in Avondale Town Center will hold a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on April 1, followed by a free community dinner between 5 and 7 p.m.
Mayor Ruby Kinsey Mumphrey congratulated Spirit of Christ church on paying off its mortgage (described in the record as "over half $1,000,000" paid off over nine years) and noted Artworks is producing a documentary on the village with expected completion in July.
Mr. Lehi said the village will hold two public hearings on Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) priorities on April 8 and April 22 as part of a three-year cycle for listing priority projects. He invited residents to attend and offer project suggestions.
Taken together, the announcements outline several community events and near-term capital improvements at Memorial Field; council encouraged residents to attend the upcoming public hearings for grant-funded projects.
