Senate celebrates children and civic engagement with adoption of resolution

The Washington State Senate on Feb. 13, 2026, adopted Senate Resolution 8681 celebrating children and encouraging civic engagement by youth.

Senator Hunt moved adoption, saying the chamber often handles policy and budgets but that the resolution was an opportunity to recognize children as the state’s future and to emphasize listening and civic education. Hunt said, in part, that civic engagement 'doesn't begin at 18' and urged senators to support and encourage youth participation.

Senator Masal added personal remarks about raising children and the responsibilities of parents and grandparents in shaping good citizens. After floor remarks, the resolution was adopted by voice vote; the presiding officer recorded the ayes and declared the resolution adopted.

The resolution invites continued attention to pathways for opportunity and support for children but does not authorize funding or change statutes. Following adoption, the Senate returned to other business.
