Representatives of the local historical society asked the Vandalia City Council to authorize a $15,000 annual donation that is included in the city's 2026 budget to support maintenance and programming.
At the March study session, a council member introduced the request and invited Al Tuttle, identified in the transcript as a historical society representative, to summarize planned work. Tuttle said the society is responsible for about 12 buildings on roughly 8.5 acres and described immediate needs including new steps at a log house, interior plaster repair in the Federal House that requires a specialist and an interpretive sign project. He told council the society would use funds for maintenance, membership costs and projects timed ahead of an open house scheduled for April 19.
Councilmembers thanked the volunteers and discussed practical supports beyond the appropriation. One member asked that, when the city disposes of surplus equipment, staff check whether the historical society could reuse items before sale. Tuttle said membership growth has been modest, with most activity currently renewals but a few new members joining after visits.
The request was presented as an item the council needs to take formal action on at a subsequent meeting; no formal vote on the appropriation is recorded in the study session transcript.
