William Simpson, undergraduate student body president at UC San Diego, told the regents on Jan. 26 that offices for students with disabilities across the University of California often fail to deliver timely and effective accommodations.
"Offices for students with disabilities across the UC system frequently fail to deliver timely and effective accommodations," Simpson said, describing long wait times for intake, delayed processing of accommodations, limited staff capacity and testing centers reaching capacity. He added that the disconnect between testing centers and professors creates last-minute confusion.
Simpson reminded the regents that "under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the university has a legal obligation to provide timely, effective, and accessible accommodations," and said failures can put the institution at risk. He urged accessibility to be treated as a core university function rather than an auxiliary service.
