Ogden monitors county notice that could end interlocal solid-waste agreement; contingency options discussed

Ogden City staff told council members on Feb. 3 that Weber County issued a six-month termination notice on Dec. 23, 2025 for the interlocal agreement to use the county transfer station, with an effective termination date of June 30, 2026, though the county said it hoped to rescind the notice if negotiations succeed.

Justin (Speaker 17) said Ogden accounts for roughly 33–38% of the county transfer station's tonnage and that, if Ogden stopped delivering waste to the county facility, the county operation could be at risk. City staff are awaiting further details from the county on proposed operating costs and ongoing negotiations (council members said the county expected to provide more information by about March 15). The city also maintains an agreement with the Ogden Transfer Station on Midland Drive, which accepts recyclables and could accept waste; Ogden's refuse-collection operation allows the city to transport its own collected material to alternate facilities.

Council members stressed the value of competition to keep prices reasonable and raised questions about Republic (the landfill operator) negotiations and whether neighboring municipalities would follow Ogden's lead. Staff said the city is evaluating contract options and contingency plans and will keep residents' access to a local drop-off site as a priority. No formal decision was taken; staff said they will return with updated cost and negotiation details.
