Herriman council adopts 2024 Water Conservation Plan; city to launch customer portal

The Herriman City Council on Jan. 8 adopted the city'024 Water Conservation Plan by unanimous vote, approving ordinance 2025-01 after a staff presentation and a public hearing that drew no speakers.

Justin, the staff presenter, told the council the plan is required by the state and lays out goals and actions to reduce water use. "First, it's a state requirement," Justin said, adding that the city is already "ahead of those goals." He reported an average per-capita water use of about 167 gallons per day for 20192023 and described the plan's three buckets: education and outreach; pricing, incentives and standards; and physical system improvements.

Justin also announced a customer web portal that will allow residents to create accounts to see real-time water use, set high-usage notifications and receive leak alerts; staff said the portal will be available to set up this month. He noted the plan increases the city's ability to qualify for state funding and will be incorporated into the city's general plan, as required by 2022's SB 110.

Council members praised staff work. One councilmember said the city has been proactive on conservation well before the statewide mandate and thanked Justin's team for leadership in regional efforts.

With no public comment during the hearing, the council moved, seconded and voted to adopt ordinance 2025-01. Recorded votes were affirmative and the motion carried.

The city will publish the adopted plan and rollout details for the customer portal in its next newsletter; staff said the new tools and outreach are intended to help customers find leaks and lower high usage before costly capital projects are required.
