Herriman council asks staff to target District 1 in search for planning commission alternate

Herriman City staff told the council the vacancy on the Planning Commission arose when a commissioner moved to the City Council and reminded members that regular commissioners serve three‑year terms while alternates serve one year. The presentation outlined the city’s selection policy, which calls for a selection committee of the mayor, a council designee and the city manager or designee, and asked the council whether to prioritize candidates from a specific district.

Several councilmembers noted that no current Planning Commissioner represents District 1 and urged that outreach begin there first. One councilmember said the city should advertise in District 1 and, if no qualified applicants respond, open the search citywide. Staff said it could also consider past applicants and would work with communications to set an application period and a selection timeline.

Councilmembers asked staff to report back with a list of applicants, the commission’s turnover and any commissioners who have signaled they will not seek another term. Staff agreed to provide that information and to proceed with outreach consistent with council direction.
