At its Feb. 12 meeting the Lakeville Parks Commission reviewed the Park Enterprise Fund and discussed both an unexpected Loon Pond Lodge repair bill and structural changes to how park maintenance is budgeted.
Chair (S1) told commissioners the commission had received a $5,000 bill to repair the lodge's fire suppression system after an inspection found the system had not been inspected in about 10 years. "We just got a $5,000 bill for their fire suppression system for their sprinklers because they hadn't been inspected in, like, 10 years," Chair (S1) said, and added that the commission typically pays about $1,500 per year for sprinklers and fire-extinguisher inspections.
Speaker 3 (S3) proposed adopting a revised chart of accounts that would break out repairs and maintenance by site (ClearPond, Ted Williams, Loon Pond, John Pond) and include line items for small tools and site-specific maintenance, enabling clearer budgeting and tracking. Commissioners discussed the idea and agreed S3 could provide the proposal again; Chair (S1) and Peter (S2) said they planned to bring the suggestion to the town accountant during upcoming budget planning.
The group also noted recurring utility minimums that affect operations (a roughly $15/month electric minimum and about $9/month water minimum were mentioned) and that parking-lot line repainting near the maintenance building could cost an estimated $4,000–$5,000 depending on contractor.
In liaison updates, Speaker 4 (S4), the commission's Community Preservation Committee (CPC) liaison, said CPC will hold a public hearing next Thursday at the police station to review its general plan and solicit public feedback on priorities and objectives. S4 also raised concerns after walking a parcel proposed for a disc-golf course, noting deer and a fawn on the property and urging attention to habitat preservation; Chair (S1) said he did not expect a disc-golf course to disrupt wildlife but acknowledged the differing viewpoints.
No formal budget reallocation or ordinance was adopted at the meeting; commissioners discussed next steps, including providing S3's chart-of-accounts recommendation to the town accountant and continuing budget review at future meetings.
