Committee questions staffing impacts as district moves positions between funds

Budget committee members raised specific staffing concerns after reviewing the proposed budget, pointing to large percentage reductions in some school line items such as classified salaries and instructional aides.

The CFO said many of the apparent decreases reflect moving positions from the general fund into other funds — for example, some instructional aides and behavior‑support aides are paid from fund 251 (the student investment account) or other grant funds. "They're still assigned to Dry Hollow," the CFO said when explaining that a position appears removed from one line but funded elsewhere.

Committee members worried that relying on attrition or grant funding could increase class sizes and reduce services. One parent‑member said moving teacher positions to attrition could raise class sizes "from 19 to 26," a change she described as significant for student attention in the classroom. CFO acknowledged that attrition and hiring newer teachers at lower salaries are part of typical budgeting dynamics and that some positions funded by grants will not continue if grants expire.

The committee asked for a more functional presentation that shows how much is being spent on instruction, special education and counseling district‑wide regardless of funding source, and asked staff to correct miscoding found in the packet before the board hearing.
