Trustees took time in the meeting to honor students and coaches.
Principal Danny Maranco introduced Kira Yamaguchi as Thornton High School Student of the Year for February 2026. Kira told the board she struggled with motivation during her sophomore year, transferred to Thornton and regained academic momentum, and said, "I'm so proud of myself." Trustees and student trustees offered congratulations and commended Thornton's small‑school support.
The board also recognized Terra Nova High School varsity football as PAL El Camino division champions and Jefferson High School varsity football as PAL Lake Division champions. Coach Nick Lotti of Terra Nova was introduced and presented certificates to available captains; trustees praised coaches for emphasizing academics—one trustee noted almost every player made grades this season. The Jefferson team was recognized for reaching its first playoff game in roughly 14–15 years and for finishing undefeated in division play under Coach Imani/Imani Stewart, who presented certificates.
Why it matters: Public recognition highlights student achievement and the district's emphasis on academics for student‑athletes and celebrates staff and community support that trustees said contributed to these successes.
