Wyoming Senate leaders publicly condemn distribution of campaign checks during session

The Wyoming Senate on Friday read a leadership statement condemning the distribution of campaign contributions to legislators during the legislative session, saying the practice risks undermining public confidence in lawmaking.

"The Wyoming senate unequivocally condemns the practices practice of distributing campaign contributions to legislators during the legislative session while measures affecting the donors clients or interest are actively under consideration," the leadership statement said. The text said such distributions can create "the appearance of impropriety" and urged lobbyists and principals to exercise "sound judgment and adhere to the highest ethical standards."

Madam Majority Leader clarified on the floor that all 31 senators had signed the statement, emphasizing the chamber's commitment to transparency and ethical conduct. The statement said the Senate expects participants in the legislative process to avoid activity that could be viewed as exerting undue influence and reaffirmed the body's duty to ensure policy decisions are made on the merits, "based on law, evidence, and the best interest of the people of Wyoming."

The joint statement did not announce new rules or sanctions; it was presented as leadership guidance and a public affirmation of principles. President Beitman read the statement and thanked members for signing. The Senate proceeded to consider numerous bill introductions after the announcement.
