Aransas County Commissioners on Thursday unanimously accepted a $12,300 grant from the Community Shop to support Animal Care Services’ adoption and public-education activities and authorized County Judge Garza to sign the grant agreement.
The grant covers event rentals, marketing, adoption accessories and youth education, with the largest line item — $6,000 — designated for photography and other marketing. Applicant representative Caitlin told the court the Community Shop accepted the Animal Care Services proposal and asked the court to approve and sign the agreement that day: “We were accepted to get the grant for the $12,300 that we asked for,” she said.
Community Shop President and grant committee chair Tess Sautier described the organization’s review process and the contract terms. Sautier said the Community Shop posts the grant form on its website, requires specific documentation, performs an initial completeness review, and then an eight-person committee evaluates qualifying applications. “No organization was declined because the money was earmarked for someone else,” Sautier said, describing how applications are evaluated separately and funding decisions are made only after applicants pass initial review.
The court-reviewed contract specifies that the $12,300 is restricted to listed purposes and covers expenses booked only between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2026; funds may not be carried over into 2027. A status report will be required by Aug. 1, 2026, and copies of receipts must be submitted to validate expenditures; unused funds must be returned to the Community Shop.
County officials and the applicant clarified administrative details: awarded funds will be issued to Animal Care Services for the specified projects, and expenses are to be remitted or documented as required by the Community Shop’s grant agreement. Commissioners recorded unanimous aye votes, and the motion to accept the grant and authorize the judge to execute the agreement passed.
The court took the action during a special meeting called for February 2026 and then proceeded to other business.
