Madison County Library requests increased local support after state probation period

Madison County Library Director Bonnie Oates told supervisors that the library is seeing heavy local use — roughly 12,000 patron visits and more than 14,000 Wi‑Fi sessions last year — and that the state has increased aid but restricts how those funds may be spent. Oates said state aid for the coming year will rise to about $109,571.50 (up from roughly $76,997) but that those funds are limited to state‑eligible expenditures (materials, digital resources) and may not be used for salaries or building repairs.

"We were put on probation because there were several years that we were flatlined and we were required to meet a certain standard," Oates said, explaining that the Library of Virginia monitors county funding levels per capita and that Madison was recently removed from the probation list after the county moved forward on funding. She requested modest additional local support to avoid returning to probation and to cover non‑state‑eligible needs such as maintenance and facilities.
