Flint board approves Concentric student reengagement pilot 6–1 after procedural objections

The Flint Board of Education approved action item 21.2, a student reengagement pilot with Concentric, in a 6–1 roll-call vote at the Committee of the Whole. Trustees split along procedural lines: several members objected to approving the contract at a special meeting and asked that the item be moved to the regular board meeting for additional public review; proponents said Concentric had presented to the board previously and urged prompt approval to meet deadlines.

Trustees who supported immediate approval said the pilot was a targeted, school-specific investment. One trustee described the contract as approximately $105,000 per school and argued that recruiting roughly 10–11 students would cover the cost; others described the expenditure as an investment in community outreach and enrollment growth. The board recorded one opposing vote from a trustee who said they were not prepared to approve the item that night and wanted more time for public input.

The motion carried 6–1. Trustees directed staff to move the pilot forward; proponents emphasized the need to accelerate enrollment efforts for the district’s roughly 2,700 students. The board did not adopt any additional conditions on the contract during the meeting.
