Police report shows crime reductions; department still short several officers

City administration and public-safety leaders reviewed an attached police report during the appropriation meeting, citing an overall reduction in crimes and an increase in tickets and arrests in some categories. The report, which staff said was circulated with meeting materials, was described as detailed and likely to prompt follow-up questions at the next meeting.

Officials credited recent investments and training for some positive trends. The administration said officers' use-of-force incidents and certain arrest figures have declined, and one staff member noted improvements in training led by officer Dennis. The commander reported the average age of the patrol fleet is just over two years.

Officials also acknowledged staffing shortfalls: the department is down about eight officers from its target strength (about 43) but staff said they are still meeting operational needs and aim for full coverage of patrol zones when possible. In parallel, the fire department reported improved staffing (including three ambulances in service) and ongoing investments in engines and ambulance billing that should boost revenue.

Council members thanked the department for producing the report; staff committed to bringing the police report to the next meeting for further discussion.
