Parents and students press AISD to adopt a standard GPA scale

A wave of recorded messages and in-person comments at Austin ISDs Feb. 12 information session pressed trustees to change what callers described as an "atypical" AISD GPA conversion that they say produces lower GPAs than comparable districts.

Multiple callers, including parents and counselors, said the districts current GPA reporting produces GPAs up to one full grade-point lower for the same course marks, with consequences for automatic scholarship thresholds, NCAA athletic recruiting and competitive summer programs. Yijing Fong, an AISD parent, said standardizing the GPA calculation "will have enormous effect on students' college application and acceptance, college financial assistance and places direct hardship on all district counselors and college readiness programs." Several callers recommended adopting a conventional unweighted 4.0 scale or better aligning AISD transcripts with national norms.

Board members asked administration for clarifying data. Superintendent José Segura and staff indicated they would investigate and report back on conversion mechanics and possible paths forward; trustees requested written follow-up and population counts to see how many students are affected. The administration did not propose an immediate change during the meeting.

Context: callers said colleges and external programs assume a standard 4.0 scale and may misinterpret AISDs reported GPAs. The board did not vote on a policy change at the session; any formal policy or transcript-format change would require later committee review and a public vote.
