DeBary briefing: metal detectors and K‑9 'Maverick' cited as part of stepped school safety plan

School safety measures were presented as part of the briefing. Unidentified Speaker 8 said metal detectors are being installed at Deltona High School (seven of 10 locations complete) and that a campus guardian drone pilot will launch at one high school within the next 60 days.

"As of this week, we started installing our metal detectors in our Deltona High School. We now have them in 7 out of the 10," Unidentified Speaker 8 said. The speaker also described a recent mock reunification exercise at Atlantic High School and preparations for graduation events.

Unidentified Speaker 8 highlighted the K‑9 unit: the K‑9 "Maverick," the presenter said, had cleared more than 200 classrooms and had assisted a South Daytona Police Department incident that yielded "a fully loaded firearm and 3 magazines." Presenters used the example to underscore the value of the K‑9 and planned safety drills.

Officials said these measures are part of a broader safety strategy and noted coordination with schools and neighboring jurisdictions; no new policy votes were taken at the briefing.
