LA Kings Burbank Sports Center reports participation growth; staff to test pickleball on rink

The LA Kings Burbank Sports Center presented its annual report to the Parks and Recreation Board, summarizing operations, programming growth and community participation under the facility's lease and operating agreement with the city.

John McGinley, Recreational Manager for Sports & Aquatics, outlined the required annual update and invited PIM representative Dave Sirianni to review programming and operations. PIM described a mix of youth and adult roller hockey, skating school sessions, community skate nights and specialty events. The presentation noted maintenance improvements, continued compliance with the lease, and an annual rent snapshot included in the slide deck.

Sirianni said their programs now include a range of offerings with 34 adult roller hockey teams, multiple weekly sessions and themed community skate nights that draw roughly 150–200 skaters. He described partnerships with regional coaches and community groups and noted the facility is exploring additional uses: staff said they will test pickleball layouts on the rink surface and attempt trial play with paddles as a next step.

Board members suggested exhibition matches and community events to raise exposure; staff and PIM said they would continue to coordinate scheduling, surface testing and possible tournament outreach while keeping public sessions affordable. No formal action was taken; the presentation was an informational annual update required by contractual obligations between the city and PIM.
