Lancaster municipal stadium renovation wins APWA SoCal award

Lancaster, CA — City staff and an American Public Works Association representative presented an award to the city for the municipal stadium renovation during the council meeting.

Steven Anderson, director with the APWA Southern California chapter, said the Building Excellence Shaping Tomorrow Awards panel reviewed more than 200 projects and selected Lancaster’s stadium in the recreation and athletics category for municipalities with populations of 100,000–200,000. "To be selected among such remarkable work is a testament to your team's dedication," Anderson told the council.

City engineer and assistant director of public works (identified in the transcript as Nicholas Gooden / Nick Godin) described the project as a conversion of the former Lancaster JetHawks minor-league baseball stadium into a 5,300-seat soccer facility accomplished through public–private partnerships with the United Soccer League and Antelope Valley Soccer. The project was also presented as an example of the city's community workforce agreement and collaboration with labor.

Council members acknowledged the award and urged staff to display the plaque publicly; staff said photos and materials would be available on the APWA website. No formal council action was required to accept the award.
