Committee advances SB 51 to allow verified threat data to follow students between schools

The House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee recommended favorably on SB 51 (second substitute), a school‑safety measure that would permit verified threat information to be shared between schools through a flag in the student information system.

The sponsor said the proposal would allow a school that identifies a serious, verified threat — for example possession of a weapon — to mark that student’s SIS record so receiving schools would be alerted and could contact the prior school for context. The sponsor framed the change as an interim, pragmatic approach "until we can build out the full" statewide system for sharing safety information.

Representative Stoddard moved the favorable recommendation; the committee approved the bill by voice vote. The sponsor waived additional remarks before committee action.
