Commissioners at the Feb. 12 session focused substantial time on how the commission will maintain existing public art and process new project submissions.
Inventory and maintenance: Commissioner Joe Andre pointed to an online inventory in the art plan and urged the commission to assign maintenance needs and prepare a budget and to‑do list. Members agreed the immediate next step is a staff-driven review to produce numbers and a proposed maintenance schedule; commissioners said they will review and prioritize projects at a planned workshop so staff presents a concise, actionable package to the full commission.
Project intake and review: Staff described the current public submission process: a web form on the city site captures project proposals and uploads, then staff circulates submissions to commissioners with a SurveyMonkey rating sheet for review. Staff said the system can accept images, and commissioners discussed possible software upgrades if submissions increase. Commissioners asked staff to send materials with the meeting packet and to provide reminders so members complete reviews before decisions are scheduled.
Parks update and sculpture installations: Parks staff reported site work at Fort Nugent and Windjammer — removal of overgrown vegetation, bench access improvements, installed landscape boulders for seating, and cleanup of a faux rock river — and said staff had placed boulders and mulch to improve visitor experience. Staff also reported a site visit with Valdez Construction that measured two sculptures in public works storage and identified two potential installation sites; staff expected those pieces to be installed by spring, contingent on completed reviews.
Student and outreach involvement: Commissioners expressed interest in involving students in maintenance tasks when appropriate and discussed outreach materials — including a downtown flyer — to encourage public participation and promote the commission’s #oharts initiative.
What’s next: Staff will complete a maintenance inventory and provide budget/priority options; commissioners will review project submissions through the established rating sheet and bring prioritized items to the commission and, when required, to council for approval.
