The county elections official told the board on Feb. 10 that absentee voting for a March 3 special election opens the next day, and that recent changes to election delivery rules tighten the timeline for requests and returns.
"The seventeenth is the last day that we can receive requests to mail out absentee ballots," the elections official said, and added that county offices must receive completed absentee ballots by 08:00 on March 3 under the changed law.
The elections office is preparing sample ballots for publication and expects heavy demand for passport services and ballot requests from seasonal residents. Staff said they will mail or email ballots directly to snowbirds when possible to mitigate delivery delays but that the post office’s forwarding changes and delivery speed create uncertainty that the county cannot control. County staff asked the board to be aware of the tighter statutory deadlines and the potential impact on returning ballots in time for the election.
The board did not take any formal action on the election timeline during the meeting but noted the special-election schedule and upcoming absentee processing steps.
