Student leaders raise concerns as district redesigns peer leadership and advisory time

Student board member Matthew told trustees he and other peer leaders support expansion only to a degree, and he urged care in combining the peer-leadership program with advisory periods.

"I do think expanding it only to a certain extent is best mainly for the reason of maintaining the community aspect that peer leadership brings," Matthew said, explaining concerns that a larger program and closer faculty oversight could reduce student agency and alter the dynamics that make the program effective.

District administrators described an adjusted schedule that adds an enhancement period and pairs peer leaders with advisories on a staggered schedule so freshman advisories meet the day before peer leadership; the aim is two touch points between peer leaders and freshmen while keeping club periods intact. Administrators said they reduced the initially proposed number of peer leaders based on feedback and will continue fine-tuning the model with advisers.

Trustees encouraged continued student input, live conversations and survey follow-ups; the board and administration agreed to keep the feedback loop open as the schedule adjustments move forward.
