Organizers of a countywide FreedomFest told the Kosciusko County Council on Feb. 12 they are planning a multi-day celebration for early June with reenactors, a car and quilt show, a veterans' wall and concerts, and that they have received approval from federal authorities for an Air Force flyover, subject to operational contingencies.
Mike, speaking for the FreedomFest committee, told the council: “We have approval from the FAA and the Pentagon for an air force flyover.” He added that approval remains subject to changes in military scheduling or weather. The committee said it is working with a Fort Wayne fighter base on the mechanics of a flyover and cautioned nothing is guaranteed.
Organizers outlined a fundraising target and a multi-part plan to upgrade fairgrounds facilities to host large-scale concerts and events. Mike said the committee has documented endorsements from the governor, lieutenant governor, "congressman Joachim," Representative Snow and Mayor Gross, and has secured in-kind or cash commitments to support fairgrounds improvements.
The presentation included an economic-impact estimate: organizers said the festival could generate between $5.8 million and $6.3 million in direct and indirect economic effects if the event secures headline acts and fundraising goals. The event plan also lists community activities (a 5K, a beard-and-mullet contest, volunteer drives) and plans to involve local nonprofits and service organizations.
Council members asked about security, traffic flow and volunteer staffing; organizers said they are coordinating with local law enforcement, volunteer groups and municipal partners and acknowledged the event will require additional coordination as plans progress.
What's next: Organizers invited council members and the public to volunteer and to attend strategic-plan open houses and promised to return with more detailed budgets and logistical plans as fundraising and vendor agreements firm up.
