The Wilson County budget committee on Sept. 1 approved several routine but consequential budget moves, accepted grant paperwork, and recommended a resolution on commissioner supplemental pay.
Committee members voted by voice to approve a $118,000 transfer from the public‑buildings budget to complete work on what staff described as the Bag Extension Building and accepted a related grant agreement for library broadband. Staff also described planned purchases of vehicles and equipment for two school‑assigned K‑9 officers; the committee moved and approved those items.
Speaker 5 told the committee the county would not have a full financial report this meeting because the trustee had not yet closed the August books following a holiday; staff said the report would be available at the next meeting.
The committee heard that the state legislature had approved an $800 salary supplement for officers who completed 2023 in‑service training and remained employed; staff characterized that as incoming funds the sheriff’s office would record. The committee also approved a line‑item transfer moving funds from in‑service staff development to travel for the sheriff’s department.
Members approved a surplus‑property list that includes mobile radios, tablets and other equipment; speakers asked staff to designate items that should be destroyed rather than auctioned if they contained protected data. The committee then considered a series of school budget amendments that reallocated funds to extended‑school programs, special‑education certification, tutoring and academic budgets, transportation, new software and tablets, maintenance and roofing projects, gym floor repairs, parking lot work and playground equipment; those reallocations were moved, seconded and passed by voice vote.
In new business, a commissioner requested replacement chairs for the county commission room and the committee agreed staff would obtain an estimate. Members also discussed holding interactive budget workshops so commissioners and the public can review revenue sources and expenditure lines; staff said workshops would be scheduled after state funding details are clearer.
The meeting ended after the committee moved to recommend a separate draft resolution on commissioner supplemental pay (see separate article). The meeting adjourned with no recorded recorded roll‑call votes on the routine items; approvals were made by voice.
