Commission proclaims February Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month after DVAC presentation

The Dickinson County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 12 adopted a proclamation designating February 2026 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month following a presentation by youth advocates from the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas (DVAC).

Jaylen Alexander, identified as a youth advocate with DVAC, read the proclamation to the board and cited national estimates that roughly one in three adolescents experience physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner and that reporting rates among teens remain low. "Teen dating violence remains a serious public health issue," the proclamation states, urging education, resources and community support for victims and survivors.

Commissioners thanked the advocates and approved the proclamation by voice vote. The board and DVAC representatives encouraged schools, parents and community organizations to promote healthy relationship skills and to connect young people with local resources.

What’s next: The proclamation is symbolic but intended to prompt outreach and education by local service providers; DVAC and county staff will coordinate future awareness events and provide information to schools and residents.
