Council approves opioid remediation agreements with Livingston and Walker police departments

The Livingston Parish Council unanimously approved two resolutions authorizing the parish president to execute agreements that will distribute state and local opioid litigation funds to local police departments for evidence-based prevention, treatment and recovery support.

Town of Livingston: Mickey McMoors introduced a proposal developed after consultations with parish chiefs asking departments to outline strategies focusing on awareness, prevention and education. Lieutenant Wadsworth of the Livingston Police Department said the funds would provide ‘‘the tools, add the labor’’ and other resources a small department needs to engage both youth and adults who come through local courts and jails.

Walker: Chief David Addison of the Walker Police Department described his agency as a small department serving a fluctuating daytime population and said Walker intends to use the funds to meet both juvenile and adult needs. He noted the department will designate coordinators (Cindy McMorris named as a coordinator) to help implement programs.

Why it mattered: Both agreements direct opioid settlement funds toward local, evidence-based strategies intended to reduce overdose risk and support treatment access, with departments emphasizing community and court-connected touchpoints as implementation venues. Council members moved and approved both resolutions without recorded opposition.

Vote details: Town of Livingston resolution — motion by Councilman Watts; second by Councilman Wascom; passed unanimously. Walker resolution — motion by Councilman Shavers; second by Councilman Mangus; passed unanimously.

Next steps: The parish president will execute the corporate endeavor agreements; departments will begin program planning and designate coordinators to oversee implementation and reporting as required by the agreements.
