Oversight Democrats open hearing accusing 'DOGE' of harming federal services and workers

Unidentified Speaker, chairing the oversight hearing, opened the session by accusing President Trump and Elon Musk of using the Department of Government Efficiency ("DOGE") "to wreck our government" and to attempt "one of the largest transfers of wealth from the poor and working class people to the rich." The speaker said the committee will place witness testimony into the congressional record and hear additional panels later in the afternoon.

The opening statement laid out a series of allegations the committee plans to investigate. Unidentified Speaker said hundreds of thousands of federal workers "have had their jobs impacted or have been driven from their careers," that collective bargaining rights have been "ripped away," and that entire agencies have been eliminated. The speaker also alleged attacks on whistleblowers and oversight safeguards that have left "waste, fraud, and abuse and corruption go unchecked."

The statement highlighted concrete examples the committee views as evidence of harm: "We have seen reckless handling of our Social Security data, potentially exposing millions of Americans to criminals and foreign adversaries," and, the speaker said, USAID "left millions of innocent people to die" and U.S.-funded food and supplies were left "to rot in warehouses and ports around the world." The opening said federal spending was "actually higher in 2025," which the speaker used to argue that the DOGE effort "saved no money" while delivering tax cuts to wealthier Americans.

Unidentified Speaker announced the committee released a report, "Breaking Government, how Doge and Trump cost taxpayers, federal workers, and public services," which the speaker encouraged attendees to obtain. The chair also thanked local hosts, including the Fairfax Board of Supervisors and Chairman Jeff McKay, and "Representative Stansbury, who led our Doge committee for Democrats." The opening concluded with the chair yielding to Representative Suhremanyan for an opening statement and a note that witnesses will testify later in the afternoon.
