At its Feb. 12 meeting the Grand Rapids Planning Commission took a number of routine and procedural actions in addition to the larger land‑use approvals.
Historic designation: Historic preservation planner Rhonda Baker presented the final report for local designation of the Dean Kendall House at 2350 Leonard NW, saying the local report largely copies the National Register nomination and will be forwarded with the Historic Preservation Commission’s comments to the City Commission. The Planning Commission moved to acknowledge receipt of the final report and expressed support for the designation; the motion carried.
Extension request: Staff said Messiah Baptist Church requested a second six‑month extension to substantially commence work on a previously approved special land use; the commission granted the extension to Sept. 26, 2026, citing project complexity and the need for additional time.
Procedural notes: Commissioners disclosed conflicts of interest at the start of the meeting (recusals related to the Wealthy Street project and the addition of the Messiah Baptist extension); the meeting was livestreamed and adjourned after public comment.
Next steps: The acknowledged historic designation will proceed to the Historic Preservation Commission and City Commission, and the extension moves the Messiah Baptist project’s substantial commencement deadline forward by six months.
