Member Michael Pantaleone urged the Tourism Advisory Committee on Thursday to consider modest, readable "Welcome to Prescott" entrance signs with digital message capability at major city gateways to promote year‑round events and the city’s brand. He described the concept as “clean and simple” and suggested sponsorships to help offset installation and operating costs.
John Heiney, a city staff member, said the proposal would require research on locations, rights‑of‑way, easements and cost estimates and would likely be treated as a capital purchase. He told the committee the city’s current budget planning makes FY27 the earliest comfortable target and offered to return with a research report outlining options, costs and any easement or permitting hurdles.
Committee members raised practical concerns. Member Nick Medina questioned whether sponsorships would “convolute” the city’s message and urged a clear, consistent brand rather than multiple sponsor logos. Member James (Jim) Dawson cautioned that drivers on Highway 69 have only a few seconds to view signage and recommended outside marketing expertise to evaluate legibility and impressions.
The committee did not take action. Staff said it would research legal, operational and financial issues, prepare cost estimates and return to TAC with recommendations; any purchase and contracts would require council approval.
Next steps: staff will gather site, permitting and cost information and report back to TAC; the committee indicated informal support for initial research but no formal direction to purchase.
