Dr. Lamont Francis and members of the Mount Diablo Unified Black Educators Association presented to the board on Feb. 11 about the association’s mission, activities and recruitment work.
The association said Black certificated educators make up about 1.9% of the district’s certificated teaching staff (approximately 31 teachers) and described mentorship, recruitment trips — including outreach at Jackson State University — and a monthly professional community for Black educators.
The presentation tied the association’s goals to the district LCAP and described planned events for Black History Month and a district‑wide celebration. The association asked members of the community and district staff to support recruitment and to infuse culturally responsive and affirming curriculum systemwide.
Board members asked about classroom representation and the association said many Black employees are in roles beyond classroom teaching; the association reiterated a desire to increase both recruitment and retention of Black classroom teachers.
