The Colorado Senate on Feb. 11 adopted Senate Joint Resolution 10, joining Asian American communities in recognizing Lunar New Year and encouraging Coloradans to attend local celebrations.
Senator Donna Gonzalez, sponsor of the resolution, asked colleagues to join in the measure and named community leaders and guests in the gallery who helped secure the recognition. The text the clerk read cites Colorado’s prior recognition of the holiday and references House Bill 23 12 71 as the enabling action that designated the first Friday of every February as an observed state holiday.
Gonzalez said the resolution affirms the General Assembly’s support for Asian American cultural traditions and invited attendance at community Lunar New Year events. After the sponsor’s remarks, the resolution was put to a recorded vote and adopted by a tally of 32 yes, 0 no, 0 absent, and 3 excused.
The resolution notes the historical and cultural significance of Lunar New Year, recounts national and global participation statistics included in the measure, and directs that copies be sent to the governor, Colorado’s congressional delegation, and named community leaders.
