During public forum at the Town of Oakland commission meeting on Feb. 10, a Vox Populi editor announced a virtual candidates forum in March, a resident raised concerns about a nearby encampment, and town staff reviewed recent lobbying and upcoming public events.
Noreen Dworkin, editor in chief of Vox Populi, told the commission that the nonprofit will host a moderated virtual candidates forum at 7:00 p.m. in March featuring Commissioner McMullen and challenger Anne Fulton, moderated by Steve Port. Dworkin said organizers are "insisting that people register so that we can... make sure that we don't have outside agitators come" and that the forum will be recorded and posted to YouTube for later viewing.
A resident, Lou Smith of 316 North Tubbs Street, reported finding an encampment near Tucker Farms and along a dog trail near the turnpike. Smith said children were present at the site and that he did not want to involve Winter Garden code enforcement unless laws were being broken, stating he planned to "leave them alone" unless there was a legal violation. The presiding officer acknowledged that the town is monitoring the situation.
Town staff (Elise) reported that Mayor Taylor, Commissioner McMullen and the town lobbyist traveled to Tallahassee on Jan. 28 to discuss the town's $1,500,000 appropriations request and property‑tax implications of pending reforms. Staff announced a public educational session on Feb. 24 about Charter Amendments with legal counsel available to answer questions, noted a Black History Month exhibit on display through March 27 with an artist reception on Feb. 19, and said tickets are on sale for a March 7 event at the Oakland Nature Preserve.
Public works (Jonelle) reported a staffing transition and an upcoming sanitary survey. Commissioners also reminded residents of the Feb. 26 deadline to request a vote‑by‑mail ballot ahead of the March election.
The meeting record shows no formal action taken during public forum; public comments and staff updates were informational.
