Mayor details antisemitism monitoring, cites Ogden arrest and local threats

At the Feb. 11 meeting, the presiding official reported on a recent briefing with the Combat Antisemitism Movement and representatives of the United Jewish Federation of Utah, including the federation’s security lead.

The mayor said the security lead, described in the meeting as a 24‑year FBI agent, monitors online activity and that the group’s work helped identify an attempted bombing in Ogden. The mayor told the council the team traced a threatening phone number to New York, located the suspect there, and that authorities both arrested the individual and connected him with medical or mental‑health services. The mayor said the suspect’s parents in Layton were unaware of his online activity.

The mayor also said the security group had identified what he described as "a cell of neo Nazi anti Semitic group in Clinton." He emphasized that some online activity remains protected speech while other statements that threaten individuals cross into criminal conduct.

The mayor framed these points as reasons for local officials and residents to stay attentive to online threats and to rely on specialized security partners to investigate and de‑escalate potential attacks. The council did not take formal action on the briefing during the meeting.
