Board approves Herriman High overnight travel exception for track meet

The Jordan School District board unanimously approved an exception allowing Herriman High School’s track team a second, one‑night overnight trip to compete in Saint George.

Brad Sorensen, who presented the request, told the board both trips are one‑night travel to outdoor invitationals and the extra entry would improve the team’s RPI ranking and chances of qualifying for postseason meets.

"Track is awaiting our decision on if they can move forward with that second opportunity to go down to Saint George and compete," Sorensen said.

Board members discussed the policy limits that govern overnight travel (a 375‑mile radius for local trips, two nights maximum and a limit of two trips), academic impacts of missed class time and expected costs. After the motion — made by Dr. Robinson and seconded by Mr. Denford — the chair called for a voice vote; the motion carried unanimously.

Members closed the item with words of encouragement to the team.
