Scott County Coroner Johnny White described significant operational shortfalls in his office and asked the council for a multi‑line appropriation to address staffing, training and equipment needs.
White told the council his office's budget had not been substantially updated in more than a decade and outlined one‑time purchases (autopsy tables, file cabinets), recurring needs (training, supplies), and staffing gaps. He requested increasing the deputy coroner salary line, adding part‑time/special deputy funding and boosting autopsy and training lines to reduce repeated requests through the year.
Councilors discussed phased funding and recommended a conservative initial approach. They agreed to provide part‑time special deputy funds at reduced levels initially and to permit the coroner to return for additional appropriations if spending requires it. The council approved Ordinance 2026‑10 totaling $32,334 to cover the prioritized needs, and encouraged the coroner to return with specific invoices or additional requests as necessary.
Members praised the office’s recent work to modernize records and technology but noted countywide budget constraints. The coroner agreed to keep the council informed and to return if more funds are required later in the year.
