Assistant Director Adam Richter said on site at MacArthur Park that crews have expanded the city’s dog park from 1.9 acres to approximately 4 acres and are installing new features aimed at year-round use and safety.
"We've expanded the footprint of the site from 1.9 acres to approximately 4 acres," Richter said, describing a design that includes four separate paddocks—two for large dogs, one for small dogs and an all-weather turf area with agility features intended to be "open rain or shine." He added that the added paddocks will allow staff flexibility to perform necessary maintenance without closing the entire park.
The project also calls for upgrades to natural turf, irrigation and drainage to keep the park in "excellent condition year round." Richter said staff "may delay the grand opening if necessary" to ensure turf is properly established. The city broke ground in June 2025 after what Richter described as approval from the City Council and the Coppell Recreation Development Corporation (CRDC) board.
Officials are installing a 6 foot Ameristar Wireworks fence "built to withstand the day to day wear and tear of playful pups," additional gates to improve ingress and egress, three shade structures to complement preserved west-side trees, new and improved drinking fountains, dog wash stations, and LED perimeter lighting intended to improve visibility and safety.
Richter thanked Mayor Wes Mayes, the City Council, the Parks and Recreation Board and the Coppell Recreation Development Corporation boards for their support. He asked residents to "be on the lookout for further updates and details regarding the grand opening for later this spring," reiterating that the opening date could change to protect turf establishment.
The update was a presentation-style on-site briefing; no new ordinances, votes or funding details were announced during the remarks. Officials did not specify construction completion dates, estimated cost, or funding sources. The city said more details will be provided before the grand opening.
