Board recognizes teachers, students and school achievements

The Houston County Board of Education opened its Feb. 10 meeting with recognition of teachers, students and school teams from across the district.

Northside Elementary Principal Dr. Christina Cummings introduced Amy Von Oven as the school’s Teacher of the Year, noting her role mentoring Pre‑K teachers countywide and contributing to curriculum work. Von Oven brought a Pre‑K student, Wes Watkins, who was recognized for classroom leadership.

Representatives from Parkwood Elementary highlighted current teacher-of-the-year Dr. Gilmore Barber, kindergarten student Zaylee, and fifth-grader Demarly Williams for academic enthusiasm and leadership. Perry Middle School Principal Dr. Heath Birch introduced students including Blake Ennis and Camden West and described their academic and extracurricular leadership.

Superintendent Dr. Rogers also acknowledged district successes: Veterans High School and Houston County High School earned AP School Honor Roll recognition; Bon Air Middle School advanced in regional academic bowl competition; Hilltop Elementary and regional swim teams earned regional trophies. Dr. Rogers thanked counselors and announced an upcoming teacher recruitment fair scheduled for Feb. 21 at Veterans High School.

What’s next: Students returned to their schools after a brief intermission; the recognitions were ceremonial and informational rather than action items.
