The Simsbury Police Department announced on Feb. 9 that it received a Congressional Directed Spending award to fund new call‑handling software that will integrate with the department’s existing computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
Chief (Unidentified Speaker 3) told commissioners the $6,262,000 request was granted and that the department expects no cost in year one; after the first year, ongoing service costs were described as likely to be under $10,000. The chief said the department submitted the request in 2024 and has reconfirmed the vendor quote.
The chief described the software as functionally similar to current emergency medical dispatch (EMD) protocols but integrated with CAD to standardize call protocols for less‑frequent incidents and to improve call handling. He said the award will move forward once the Department of Justice completes the award process.
Commission members asked who authored the grant; an unidentified commissioner (Unidentified Speaker 4) asked for clarification and the chief said, “That particular one I wrote.”
The department did not provide a contract or award schedule in the meeting. The chief said the department will post updates as the award is processed and work with the vendor on implementation details. The commission did not take a formal vote on the purchase at this meeting.
Next steps: the department will complete the award-processing steps with the Department of Justice and return to the commission with implementation details and any required procurement approvals.
