HURON — The Huron City Commission approved several infrastructure and administrative items Monday night, including a quote for a new vehicle bridge at the Broadland Creek Golf Course and a large construction payment for Dakota Avenue improvements.
The commission voted to accept a $45,009.28 quote from True North Steel of Fargo, North Dakota, to design and fabricate a larger, vehicle‑rated bridge to replace an eroded span at Broadland Creek Golf Course and authorized the mayor to sign the contract. "This has been an ongoing project," the presiding officer said, noting the previous bridge's span was no longer adequate and that the new structure is rated for heavier equipment. Sean Snauthar, the newly promoted assistant city engineer, said the bid "came in under budget" and that engineering recommended approval with installation expected after a lead time into late June or early July.
The commission also approved pay request No. 13 from BX Civil and Construction for $460,353.24 for remaining work on the 2024 Dakota Avenue improvements. "This is pretty much the lion's share of what's left," Snauthar said, adding that a few punch-list items remain to be completed in spring. Engineering recommended payment.
On the consent agenda the commission approved minutes of the Feb. 2 meeting, authorized employment of Ryan Schwartz in a water/sewer maintenance uncertified position and a SAW 2 in solid waste maintenance (both effective Feb. 23, 2026), and approved the promotion of Sean Snauthar to assistant city engineer effective Feb. 22. The commission also approved a bingo permit for the Huron Area Senior Center to hold bingo every Thursday beginning Feb. 19 and approved payment of the city's bills.
Finance Director Pauline Carey presented an update to the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance (SDPAA) intergovernmental agreement. Carey said the revisions are primarily organizational — moving language within section nine — and include a clarified limit that no member shall have more than one representative serving on the SDPAA board at the same time. She told the commission the changes "do not alter anything" substantive in the agreement; the commission approved the update and authorized the mayor to sign.
Commissioner Klute announced that the solid waste facility will be closed Monday, Feb. 16, in observance of Presidents' Day; Monday routes will be serviced on Wednesday, Feb. 18, and residents should place containers out the night before. The presiding officer confirmed city offices will be closed Feb. 16 and that the next regular commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23.
All motions noted in the meeting were approved by roll call vote.
