Representatives of a local fishing club told the Port Richey event committee they can operate a fishing tournament associated with the seafood festival with minimal city oversight, and the committee agreed to let the club organize the event subject to a follow‑up plan.
Mary Malinatus (introducing herself with an address for the record) and Kelly Tyler described how the club typically runs tournaments, promotes via social media and member networks, and handles entry and prize logistics. Malinatus said the club would prefer to "run it with as little involvement from y'all as possible" while accepting help from the city on promotion and venue coordination.
Key operational points discussed included entry fees and prize guarantees. Committee members recounted a prior prize structure (first/second/third: $1,000/$500/$300) and raised concerns about gambling rules and minimum‑entry thresholds; the club said past tournaments used low entry fees to boost participation and that prize money is typically funded out of entry receipts. A $100 per‑person entry fee and a $150 day‑of fee were discussed as possible models, and the club said it can accept online registration through its website with a QR code for city promotions.
Insurance and liability were also addressed. Club representatives said they maintain waivers and corporate legal support; the committee requested copies of any insurance certificates and waivers so the city need not assume liability. Staff noted that the city typically asks for vendor/organizer insurance copies so the city is listed as additionally insured where appropriate.
The committee agreed there was no objection to the fishing club running the tournament; staff asked the club to bring a detailed plan (entry form, fees, registration link or QR code, minimum participant threshold and a prize‑fund plan) to the next committee meeting for final logistics and any budget decision on prize guarantees.
Next steps: club to provide a written plan and registration link; committee/staff to circulate a QR code and promote registration once details are finalized.
