Puerto Rico House holds special session to honor singer Olga Tañón

The Puerto Rico House of Representatives convened a special session on Feb. 9, 2026, to honor singer Olga Tañón for her decades-long artistic career and philanthropic work. Lawmakers read a formal motion praising her recordings, tours and awards and presented a framed recognition to the artist and members of her family.

Rosa Cheli Rivera Santana, Secretary of State, read a message on behalf of Governor Jennifer González Colón that framed the recognition in terms of cultural promotion and tourism. Rivera Santana said, “Por cuanto el gobierno de Puerto Rico reconoce a Olga Tañón por una trayectoria artística que ha elevado el nombre de la isla a los más altos niveles.”

Multiple representatives from different delegations offered remarks highlighting Tañón’s record sales, industry awards and charitable activity. One member who read the motion summarized her achievements in part by noting her extensive discography and international presence: “Olga Tañón es una de las figuras más emblemáticas e influyentes de la música latina.” Family members and collaborators joined the floor for brief tributes and a short video was shown to the chamber.

Tañón addressed the assembly, thanking members and describing the recognition as deeply personal. She spoke about returning to Puerto Rico for family and community reasons and expressed willingness to continue supporting social causes, including work on behalf of older adults and people with disabilities.

The House recessed briefly to allow a musical performance by students of the Sotero Figueroa school, and the session then moved on to the legislative calendar. The motion of recognition and the governor’s prepared statement were entered into the House record; the formal next step for any enactment of place-name honors referenced in later remarks (an associated road-designation resolution discussed later in the session) was reported as pending the governor’s signature.
