Dr. Gresham, speaking for the Human Resources Office, outlined the district's hiring process and reported on 2025 and current staffing figures while the school board took multiple routine votes.
"We hired 68 certified teachers [in 2025], including 10 for this second semester," Dr. Gresham said, summarizing hiring volume and the multi-step process the district uses: identify retirements/resignations, hold staffing meetings with principals, post openings on the district website and other sites, interview candidates, conduct reference checks and complete onboarding and background checks before employment start.
Gresham described how staffing changes often trigger cascading or "domino" moves when administrators or teachers shift between schools. He also gave substitute statistics: "Last year, there were 264 people who applied to be substitutes ... Of the 264, 148 actually completed the process."
After that presentation the board adopted routine business (approval of the Jan. 29, 2026 minutes, claims and the docket) on a motion by Mrs. Wilhelm, seconded by Mr. Mosby; the motion carried with the customary "All in favor" response. The board also approved two donations for Tecumseh High School ($500 from Hart Township and $700 from Sierra Cormier/CenterPoint Benevity Program) and approved agenda personnel items including non-certified staff hires and leaves. Several resignations and retirements were announced with effective dates listed by HR.
The board discussed staffing strategy during questions; Dr. Gresham said the district attempts to manage enrollment declines through attrition and voluntary transfers and that criminal-background checks are completed after the hire decision but before start of employment.
