Rockford Public Schools on Monday approved three information‑technology contracts the district said will lower recurring communications costs and modernize network security.
District staff and consultant Chris Muser (Communication by Design) recommended renewing the firewall/network equipment support for $197,095.50, to be paid from 2019 bond proceeds and partially reimbursed by E‑Rate Category 2 (the district noted a roughly 60% E‑Rate / 40% local split). Muser said Arbor Solutions, the current provider and long‑time vendor, submitted a proposal that matched existing pricing and that renewal was recommended for continuity and warranty reasons.
The board also approved a 60‑month SIP trunk (voice over IP phone) contract with Spectrum Business at $710 per month. Staff contrasted the new contract with current monthly costs of about $2,213.25 and called the lower rate “significant savings.” “With the new 60 month term, it's down to $710 a month,” a district presenter stated.
Finally, the board approved a 60‑month Spectrum Business contract for internet service at $945 per month, down from about $2,300 under the prior arrangement. Staff said the ISP contract leverages E‑Rate Category 1 reimbursement and that the district will file annually to receive the roughly 40% non‑local share as reimbursement on eligible costs.
District technology staff explained timing for cutovers to minimize disruption: Internet and SIP transitions will be coordinated so cutover work likely happens over a winter break or other scheduled downtime. The contracts were approved by voice/hand votes.
What it means: The district expects immediate recurring savings from telephony and internet rates and continued E‑Rate reimbursement for eligible items. Staff will manage contract start dates to align cutovers and will report changes to the board if timelines shift.
