Sumner County commissioners voted to transfer $816,684.60 from the hospital fund to the Board of Education to fund Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) playground projects.
The chair introduced the transfer, citing an earlier resolution. Miss Browning confirmed the sum and explained that the money is in an interest-bearing account; commissioners debated whether additional interest accrued before expenditure should remain with the account or be moved to the general fund. "This is how much they get. $816,684.60," one commissioner said when restating the amount. Another commissioner moved to close the account and direct all remaining funds to the schools; the motion was discussed and put to votes on amendments. Ultimately, commissioners approved the transfer and agreed that additional accrued interest would be handled per the adopted motion (interest designated to the general fund in the final vote).
Commissioners also discussed encumbering the money and timing for project work; staff said schools planned to encumber funds before the end of the year and that project work would continue over the summer. The chair instructed staff to ensure appropriate handling of interest and encumbrance as the projects move forward.
Next steps: finance staff and Board of Education staff will coordinate encumbrance and the disposition of any interest earned before project spending.
