The Alpena Marina Committee on Monday approved a motion to prioritize preexisting seasonal slip holders when assigning open marina slips, the panel said during its monthly meeting.
Committee members moved and voted to adopt a policy recommendation that priority be given to current slip holders who want to move within the marina, with first-come, first-served rules applied among that group. Chair (unnamed in the transcript) introduced the recommendation and members voiced support before the motion passed by voice vote.
The change was framed as a fairness and seniority measure. A member said preexisting slip holders should have preference because long-term tenants may have accessibility or other needs; others agreed that those already in the marina should be able to express interest in moves before openings are offered to new seasonal renters.
Harbor staff reported the marina currently has 22 open slips and a wait list of about 16 people; staff also said they are contacting delinquent account holders and moving toward enforcement for outstanding summer slip fees. Harbor Master Steve told the committee he had sent a template notice and received several responses in the days after mailing.
The committee did not record individual roll-call votes in the minutes; the chair called for all in favor and the motion passed by voice vote. Committee members said staff will implement the approach and present operational details at a future meeting.
The committee adjourned at the end of the meeting; its next session is scheduled for March 5.
