Board trims committee representation and adopts new K–12 math curriculum

The Charlottesville City Schools board voted to modify its committee assignments and approved new math instructional materials for the coming year.

On the consent agenda, trustees considered a motion from Ms. Dooley to remove the board's representation on the Public Education Fund of Charlottesville-Albemarle and the Charlottesville scholarship program from the committee list. After discussion the board voted to remove those two assignments; the chair announced the motion passed 5–2.

Separately, the board adopted recommended math curricula. Miss Mitchum summarized the recommendation to adopt Mathspace for grades 6 through Algebra 2, Bridges for kindergarten through grade 3, and STEMscopes for grades 4 and 5. Staff clarified they are pausing consideration of an AI tutor add‑on and that teachers will continue to be able to provide printed, teacher‑led practice for students who do not use online components. Miss Bridal moved the adoption; it was seconded and approved by voice vote.

The math adoption includes a classroom textbook set to be available for in‑class use (not for home), an implementation plan with teacher professional learning and a data dashboard to inform targeted instruction. Staff said the online practice component is expected to require about two short assignments per week and that teachers may print problems for students who prefer pencil‑and‑paper work.

The board did not record roll-call tallies for the curriculum vote in the minutes beyond voice concurrence; the committee reassignment was recorded as passing 5–2.
